Manufacturing Growth Opportunities Initiative
The State of Massachusetts recently passed legislation funding a grant to The Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP) to conduct a study of the manufacturing industry in Berkshire, Bristol, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire Counties, provided that the study will assess global market opportunities, identify barriers to growth, develop a strategic road map for future growth, and identify next steps to transfer this methodology to other regions. MassMEP contracted RTI International to conduct a study to better understand the barriers that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the five counties face in growing their businesses. The results described a manufacturing base consisting of mature companies in established industries that are growing modestly in the improving domestic economy.
Staying Power II: A Report Card on Manufacturing in Massachusetts 2012
The Dukakis Center released our latest report on the manufacturing sector in Massachusetts. Staying Power II is a follow-up study to our first study on the manufacturing sector conducted back in 2007. As with the first report, what our research found is that the manufacturing sector is more robust and resilient that is commonly perceived. Productivity continues to increase at a rate much faster than the rest of the economy.
