Celebrate Manufacturing Month: Driving Innovation and Growth in Massachusetts

Kathie Mahoney, President of MassMEP

October is an exciting time in Massachusetts. October is Manufacturing Month, a time to recognize the critical role manufacturing plays in the economy of Massachusetts and across the nation. For the Commonwealth, manufacturing isn’t just a sector—it’s a powerhouse that fuels innovation, supports thousands of jobs, and drives our local economy. We kick-off Manufacturing Month with Massachusetts Mash-Up. ( https://mashupmfg.org/ )

So, why is Manufacturing Month so important, and why should everyone—from policymakers to students—take notice?

The Backbone of Massachusetts’ Economy

Manufacturing is the lifeblood of the Massachusetts economy. The state boasts a rich history of manufacturing, from textiles in the Industrial Revolution to cutting-edge advanced manufacturing technologies today. Currently, over 7,000 manufacturing firms operate in the Commonwealth, employing more than 240,000 workers. These companies contribute over $54 billion to the state’s GDP, making it a critical industry that keeps Massachusetts economically vibrant and competitive on the global stage.

Manufacturing is responsible for not only producing goods but also generating wealth that circulates through local businesses, schools, and public services. It’s the multiplier effect—when manufacturing thrives, so do countless other sectors, including retail, construction, and education.

Advancing Innovation and Competitiveness

Massachusetts is a global leader in research and innovation, and manufacturing is at the heart of that success. From aerospace and robotics to biotechnology and renewable energy, our state’s manufacturers are producing groundbreaking products that set the standard for industries worldwide. Manufacturing Month shines a spotlight on these innovations and the people behind them—the skilled workers, engineers, and visionaries who keep Massachusetts on the cutting edge.

High-Tech Careers That Keep Massachusetts Talent Local

One of the most exciting aspects of modern manufacturing is the wide range of high-paying, high-tech careers available. The days of the stereotypical factory job are long gone. Today’s manufacturing sector requires skills in automation, data analysis, engineering, and even artificial intelligence. Manufacturing Month helps highlight these opportunities, particularly for young people who may not have considered a career in this evolving field.

In fact, many manufacturing jobs in Massachusetts offer wages that are significantly above the national average. For example, the average salary for a manufacturing worker in Massachusetts is approximately $95,000, a figure that continues to rise as demand for skilled labor increases. This makes manufacturing not only a crucial contributor to the state’s economy but also a stable and attractive career path for local talent.

Securing the Future of Local Jobs

Manufacturing Month also provides an opportunity to address challenges and future opportunities in the industry. One of the most pressing issues is the need to fill the growing number of open positions due to retirements and the evolving nature of manufacturing work. In Massachusetts alone, it is estimated that 100,000 manufacturing jobs will need to be filled over the next decade.

To secure the future of these jobs and keep businesses rooted in Massachusetts, organizations like MassMEP (Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership) are working tirelessly to offer training and upskilling programs. These efforts ensure that the current and future workforce is equipped with the skills needed to meet the demands of a rapidly changing industry.

Why You Should Get Involved

Manufacturing Month is an opportunity for everyone to get involved—from students and job seekers to business leaders and educators. Throughout October, there will be open houses, factory tours, webinars, and other events designed to showcase the innovative work happening right here in Massachusetts.

Supporting manufacturing means supporting the growth and prosperity of our entire state. Whether you’re exploring a career change, advocating for policy that supports local businesses, or simply curious about what’s made in your own backyard, Manufacturing Month offers a window into one of the most dynamic and vital sectors of our economy.

So this October, let’s celebrate Manufacturing Month with energy and pride. Let’s champion the innovation, ingenuity, and hard work that make Massachusetts a national leader in manufacturing! Tag @MassMEP on your LinkedIn posts, we would love to see everything manufacturing related in Massachusetts.
