5S Kaizen Online – Small Business Direct Access (SBDAP)

Training Description: 5S Workplace Organization and Standardization: This training instills a five-step highly disciplined housekeeping technique. This technique provides the Ôhow to’ for a manufacturer to clean up the typically disorganized work area and ensure the success of lean manufacturing on the shop floor.

The 5 steps are:
¥ Sort through all items and remove unneeded items
¥ Set in Order remaining items, set limits, create temporary location indicators
¥ Shine or clean everything and use cleaning as inspection
¥ Standardize the first 3 S’s by implementing visuals displays and controls
¥ Sustain the gains through self-discipline, training, communication and total employee involvement.
Training Objective: Students will experience and learn the basic 5S methodology
¥ Complete visual order & minimum waste of motion in the work area
¥ Maximize value adding work
¥ Point-of-Use Communications resulting in reduced scrap & rework
¥ Safety and improved Quality of Work Life
¥ A basis for Continuous Improvement
¥ "RED” Tagging Unneeded Items List
¥ Hands on experience with Setting-in-Order (Visuals)
¥ Workplace 5S Sustaining Plan and 30-day Kaizen To-Do List

Skill Attainment: 5S Kaizen training will provide a clear understanding and application of the 10 step kaizen process for improvement using the Deming Cycle of continuous improvement; Plan, Do, Check and Act. This training will be used over again and again and will become the standard method for addressing improvement opportunities going forward. The 5S technique provides the Ôhow to’ to clean up the production and office areas that lets employees "see” for the first time the waste that is inherent to the process. This basic tool will become the first step for students to eliminate waste and to streamline work areas.

Lean Six Sigma Info Session Webinar

Is lean six sigma the right choice for your company?

If your company struggles with high variability/scrap, recurring issues or inefficient business processes Lean Six Sigma could be the solution you have been searching for. Lean Six Sigma certifications contain proven methods to minimize waste and reduce costs.

Learn the power behind DMAIC: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. You don't need to be a math wizard or statistician. Using the Keep It Simple Statistically approach (KISS) and the proven roadmap for choosing the "RIGHT" projects, key business results can be achieved. Participants will learn to identify and lead both projects and other team members to increase their contribution and value to the organization. Organizations will see quality and productivity results along with workforce development and employee engagement.

Through deployment of a Lean Six Sigma program participants will learn:

    • Critical thinking
    • Gain improved process and product knowledge
    • Learn how to reduce variation and remove non-value added activities
  • Gain leadership skills
  • Focus on the Voice of the Customer
  • Decrease defect rates
  • Reduce cost and cycle times

Learn about what to expect when installing a Desktop Metal System; Overview of install & operations experience, facility, safety & training requirements, vendor support; How the BIC, CCAT and UMaine benchmarked these systems; How to access benchmark files and data; Description of DM case studies underway at BIC; How to access BIC’s facility for training, application development and project collaboration.

This session will be recorded and made available on-demand.

Learning Objectives

Learn how Desktop Metal Studio System can be used in defense manufacturing:
¥ How to prepare your facility, permitting requirements, facility certification options
¥ OSHA training and safety requirements, compared with LPBF, DMLS, LENS and Binder Jetting
¥ Advantages / disadvantages of printing with bound metal powder compared with LPBF
¥ Outline applications for DM metal prototypes, fixtures, molds and end use parts
¥ Review of the design process for benchmarking, developed with CCAT and UMaine – Can the NIST AM Test Artifact be used in FDM metal printing or is a new standard needed?
¥ Comparison of benchmark results with other 3D printing processes available at CCAT, BIC and UMaine (including LPBF, Binder Jetting, large format polymer FDM and DMLS)

Scan To Facility Layout with Functional 3D

Zoom

Moving into a new building? Expanding your current one? 3D scans can help you increase the efficiency, speed and accuracy of your facility layout project.

3D scanning used to be something for science fiction. However, the technology is quite real and available and offers very real benefits to small and medium-sized manufacturers.

Polaris MEP has teamed up with 3D scanning specialist Christopher Wilczewski for a series of fast-paced webinars about the applications of 3D scanning in manufacturing.

The first "episode” focuses on 3D scanning when modeling or designing a facility layout. Attendees will learn how 3D scanning

  • provides significant time savings,
  • reduces chance of incorrect/missing data and
  • reduces the need for return visits.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1) Overview of how 3D scanning differs from traditional 2D measurements

2) Tips on what needs to be scanned (spoiler alert: not everything needs to be modeled!)

3) Understanding of how & why 3D scanning increases efficiency and accuracy (reducing cost and frustration)

4) Mini-Success Story: Windmoeller and Hoelscher

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • Owners, Founders, senior executives of RI manufacturing companies
  • Chief Operations Officers (COOs), Operations Managers, Chief Financial Officers (CFOs)
  • Facility move/expansion team members including maintenance and engineering

ABOUT THE TRAINER

Christopher Wilczewski is the Founder and CEO of Functional 3D, a 3D scanning service and consulting company based in Providence, RI. The focus of Functional 3D is to bring the value of 3D capture technology without the large upfront costs and time associated with integrating this kind of technology. Industries supported include commercial construction, manufacturing, design and historical preservation with projects as small as a Revolutionary War era flint to as large as a 17-story building in New York City.

Prior to starting his own firm, Christopher was an engineer and account manager at FARO Technologies, one of the leading manufacturers of 3D capture technologies. There he had the opportunity to learn and develop workflows in various fields and organizations across the US igniting his passion for the technology.

Christopher is a member of DesignXRI and the Rhode Island Manufacturing Association.
