Made in Massachusetts: Manufacturing Is All Around Us (Part 2)

Manufacturing Month continues, and so does our look at the MassMEP members making products across Massachusetts.

In Part 1 of our Made in Massachusetts series, we highlighted products found in grocery stores, restaurant kitchens, game rooms, machinery, and industrial systems. This time, we’re introducing five more MassMEP members and a different mix of products and capabilities.

Preparing Fasteners Before Assembly

The Coating House has been working with fasteners, fittings, and bolts for more than 40 years.

Located in East Longmeadow, the company specializes in pre-applied adhesive coatings for fasteners and fittings. These coatings provide locking and sealing capabilities before the parts reach the assembly process.

Applying coatings in advance allows manufacturers to receive fasteners that are already prepared for their intended application. Depending on the coating, this can help prevent loosening, provide sealing, and reduce the need for additional materials during assembly.

The Coating House serves industries including aerospace, automotive, electronics, government and military, industrial, and medical devices. In these industries, even small components can play an important role in how a finished product performs.

Ever wonder what keeps certain bolts and fasteners from loosening? Sometimes, the answer starts with a coating applied before assembly.

More Than 130 Years of Envelope Manufacturing

Worcester Envelope Company has been manufacturing envelopes since 1893.

Founded in Massachusetts and now operating in Auburn, the company manufactures envelopes for a variety of mailing and packaging needs.

Its capabilities include custom envelope manufacturing, conventional and digital printing, specialty finishes, lettershop services, and bindery.

We spend plenty of time thinking about what’s inside an envelope, but rarely about the envelope itself.

Delivering Supplies From the Air

Some products made in Massachusetts have a very different destination.

Niche Inc. operates in New Bedford, where the company manufactures cargo parachutes and aerial delivery systems.

Its products include low- and high-velocity cargo parachutes, containers, release systems, and other equipment used for aerial delivery. Applications include military resupply and humanitarian airdrops.

Cargo parachutes are designed to deliver equipment and supplies from aircraft, often in locations where ground transportation is difficult or unavailable. Different delivery systems are used depending on the type of cargo and the requirements of the drop.

Most deliveries arrive by truck or at your front door. Niche manufactures products for deliveries that take a very different route.

Millions of Precision Parts

Crystal Engineering got its start in 1956 and has grown into a precision manufacturing operation.

Today, the company operates a 26,500-square-foot facility in Newburyport and manufactures millions of parts each week for industries including automotive, medical, and aerospace.

Its capabilities include precision stamping, CNC machining, tooling, and production.

You may never see one of these precision parts on its own, but it could be working inside equipment you encounter every day.

Where Woodworking Meets Manufacturing

Mark Richey Woodworking has been producing architectural woodwork and corporate furniture since 1981.

Based in Newburyport, the company combines skilled woodworking with manufacturing technology at its 105,000-square-foot facility.

Its work includes architectural woodwork and custom furniture for projects across the country.

Custom architectural woodwork is often designed for a specific building or interior space. Each project can involve detailed planning, specialized equipment, and skilled craftsmanship to create pieces that fit the space.

You might notice the finished woodwork in a building without ever thinking about the people and equipment that made it.

More Made in Massachusetts

These five companies show another side of what MassMEP members manufacture across the state.

Some make products we recognize immediately, while others produce parts and systems designed for very specific applications. Together, they offer another look at the range of manufacturing happening across Massachusetts.

We’ll continue the Made in Massachusetts series throughout Manufacturing Month with more MassMEP members and more examples of what they make.
