October is Manufacturing Month: Celebrating Local Strength
October marks Manufacturing Month, a time to celebrate the backbone of our economy: local manufacturers. Across Massachusetts, manufacturing is more than an industry—it’s innovation, community pride, and economic resilience. How will you celebrate and support local manufacturing?
Why Local Manufacturing Matters

Manufacturing in Massachusetts remains a powerhouse. In 2024, the industry contributed nearly $63 billion to the state’s gross domestic product, accounting for about 8.4% of Massachusetts’s economy. Over 230,000 people work in manufacturing across more than 6,000 firms, and the average annual earnings for a manufacturing employee in Massachusetts—around $124,800—far exceed the state’s non-farm average of $96,000.
Beyond the numbers, manufacturing is integrated into our state’s identity. From Lowell’s role as the “Cradle of the American Industrial Revolution” to Springfield’s history as a hub of innovation, Massachusetts has always been a place where ideas are built and shared with the world. Today, advanced manufacturing spans medical devices, robotics, electronics, and clean energy—industries that will shape our future.
When we celebrate local manufacturers, we are supporting:
- Economic Growth: High-paying jobs that strengthen communities.
- Innovation: Cutting-edge technology and problem-solving.
- Community Identity: A legacy of craftsmanship and pride.
- Resiliency: Shorter, stronger, and more sustainable supply chains.
The Origin of Manufacturing Day
Manufacturing Month is anchored by Manufacturing Day (MFG Day), which began in 2012 and this year is Friday, October 3. The first celebration, held on October 5, was coordinated by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association (FMA) with support from the National Association of Manufacturers, the Manufacturing Institute, and the Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP).
Its purpose? To change perceptions. By opening factory doors to students, parents, and educators, MFG Day events showcase modern manufacturing as clean, high-tech, and full of opportunity. What started as a single day has grown into a national movement, with thousands of events each October inspiring the next generation of makers.

How You Can Celebrate
This October, we encourage everyone to “Celebrate Local”:
- Attend a Tour or Event: Many manufacturers host open houses, giving the community a behind-the-scenes look at advanced production.
- Click here to view our scheduled events.
- Support Local Businesses: Choose Made-in-Massachusetts products whenever possible.
- Share Stories: Highlight local manufacturers in your networks or on social media.
- Engage Students: Encourage schools to connect with local companies for career awareness and skill-building.
- Advocate: Support policies and programs that strengthen the manufacturing workforce pipeline and business environment.
Massachusetts manufacturers are innovators, problem-solvers, and job creators. They fuel our economy and help define our communities. As we celebrate Manufacturing Month this October, let’s honor their contributions and commit to supporting local businesses year-round.
When we celebrate local, we strengthen our economy, inspire the workforce of tomorrow, and ensure that Massachusetts remains a leader in manufacturing excellence.
